Topics covered this week include:
Understanding phobias
Are you afraid of heights or terrified of flying?
Psychologist Shawn Goldberg, director of Mindup Clinic, joins The House of Wellness radio team to discuss some of the most common fears and how to deal with them.
He explains the difference between mild anxiety and a real fear, noting that fear is an important defence mechanism to protect us from danger.
A phobia is a response which is irrational, exaggerated and disruptive to our lifestyle.
He says with a phobia such as flying, the loss of our senses – especially during turbulence – can bring the fear to the front of mind and cause a physical response that the worst might happen.
He explains the five-step process that can help people overcome phobias, with help from this tool kit.
Sinusitis and allergic rhinitis
Sinusitis and allergic rhinitis are common conditions that cause nasal congestion, a runny nose, sneezing and itching.
Leading rhinologist Professor Richard Harvey explains why saline nasal rinses can be an effective way to alleviate symptoms.
