Dealing with loneliness
Feeling lonely? You’re not alone.
Australian research shows one in three people report feeling lonely at least once a week.
At the start of Loneliness Awareness Week, Beyond Blue senior adviser and clinical psychologist Dr Luke Martin explains ways to deal with loneliness and stay connected.
Dr Martin says loneliness in old age is statistically proven to be associated with dementia, and cost of living pressures are contributing to increased feelings of loneliness.
Dr Martin’s tips include to reach out to existing relationships and try to improve them on a slightly deeper level. He also encourages people to observe people in the community who may be feeling lonely as even “micro social interactions” (e.g. a quick chat while putting the bins out) can make a difference.
Pneumococcal vaccination
Pneumococcal disease cause severe invasive disease, including meningitis, pneumonia and bacteraemia.
Gerald Quigley leads a discussion on the vaccination, which is a safe and effective way to protect you from the disease.
The vaccination is free to eligible patients, including people over 75.
