On this week’s The House of Wellness radio show:

Why you should go “dry” this January

A notion that’s popular in the Northern Hemisphere, clinical nutritionist and author Lee Holmes talks about the health benefits of abstaining from alcohol this January and his realistic tips on how to do so.

Lee uncovers what this can mean for our overall hydration and the impacts of alcohol abstinence on mental health. He also gives his recommendations for substitute drinks to help curb the temptation of reaching out for that glass of wine.

For those still looking to drink this month, Lee spills his expert advice on how you can make smart drinking choices with just seven tricks.

Plus, start the New Year on the right foot with his basic tips for a healthy eating plan.

Tips for New Year resolutions and dealing with difficult people

More than 14 million Australians have set their New Year’s resolutions for 2024, but just like promises, we know all too well how these can easily be broken!

Learn how you can effectively set up your goals with clinical psychologist Dr Rebecca Ray, and what you can do if you find yourself struggling to commit to your resolutions.

A new year can come with new challenges, and with that, difficult people.

Also a best-selling author of her new book “Difficult People”, Dr Ray dishes her checklist on how you can tell who is likely to be a difficult person and the strategies you can use to best deal with them.

How to eat safely this summer

Food safety can be a tricky ordeal when we’re right in the middle of summer, and especially during unpredictable weather and emergency power outages.

Spokesperson for the Food Safety Information Council Lydia Buchtmann gives her advice on how long your food can last in fridges and freezers during a power outage, and when you should really be throwing out your leftovers from Christmas Day.

Lydia also addresses how long should food be out in the open, if you’re planning a picnic or an outdoor barbecue, and whether or not dips and cheeses should be exposed to the summer heat for more than an hour.

Find out if you’re handling seafood and transporting perishables the right way, and why the Temperature Danger Zone matters. Plus, all you need to know about refrigeration and the important rule to follow when washing your hands.
