Combatting loneliness this Christmas, Michael Roeger’s Paralympics journey and preparing for Australia’s summer heat waves – tune into this week’s episode of The House of Wellness radio show for all that and more.

On this week’s The House of Wellness radio show:

How to combat feeling lonely this Christmas

The festive season is approaching and while this can bring joy to a lot of people with families, it can also mean loneliness for others.

Psychologist Sandy Rea talks about how you’re not alone with feeling lonely and why men are generally higher at risk for loneliness in Australia.

Sandy discusses why she has referred to loneliness as the ‘silent killer’, the key triggers behind this feeling and the negative impacts it can have on the body.

She also addresses how to seek support for loneliness, especially during the festive season, and what to do when someone you know seems lonely. Plus, why loneliness can still be felt when you’re around other people.

Michael Roeger’s Paralympics journey

In the exciting build-up to next year’s Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, homegrown Aussie champion Michael Roeger sits with The House of Wellness radio team to reflect back on his journey so far – as he works towards his fifth Paralympics in 2024.

After competing in four Paralympic games and currently holding the world record for ‘T46’ 1500 metre competition, Michael talks about how he first started getting involved in Para-Athletics.

He also thinks back about his hometown Langhorne Creek and how it had a role to play in his passion for sport. Plus, what happened at the London (2012) and Tokyo (2020) games.

Preparing for Australia’s ‘summer heat waves’

Victorian State Emergency Services manager for the Australian Red Cross, Fyowna Norton, shares her expert insight on how Aussies can prepare for a heatwave and who is most vulnerable to the impacts.

She discusses the difference between heat exhaustion and a heat stroke, and what you should do to help treat a person affected by either of these conditions. Plus, the role of Australia’s emergency services and how they can support the community through the heat waves.

Christmas tree syndrome

There’s a reason why Christmas trees may be triggering your allergies.

Whether you plan to put up a plastic or pine tree this year, the National Asthma Council Australia is warning people with asthma and allergies about the risk of Christmas tree syndrome.

Christmas tree syndrome is an allergic reaction to real or artificial trees and can cause wheezing, sneezing, coughs, sore eyes and even potentially serious asthma attacks. Real trees trap pollen, so wash them down before bringing them inside.

Plastic ones should be dusted each year.
