Simone Callahan shares her health and wellness secrets
Yoga, walks by the ocean and spending precious time with her kids have helped mum-of-three Simone find inner peace after one of the most difficult years of her life.
Simone Callahan, the ex-wife of Australian cricketing legend Shane Warne, admits life has been emotionally challenging since the sudden death of the sporting great in March last year.
Simone and Shane, who were married for 10 years before divorcing in 2005, shared three children together and remained on good terms as they continued to co-parent Brooke, 25, Jackson, 23 and 21-year-old Summer after their split.
“My kids inspire me and I’ve watched in awe their courage and their strength,” Simone reveals.
“We’ve always been really close and we’re doing the best that we can – when I see their strength, they inspire me to be stronger.”
The role yoga plays in Simone’s life
Simone credits yoga with helping her through her divorce from Shane.
“Yoga is my force for good; it’s a life practice of goodness, supporting and transforming me emotionally, physically and mentally,” the certified yoga instructor smiles.
“Twenty years ago there wasn’t a lot of yoga around and I was into my gym and personal training but I felt like there was something missing.
“I’d been to India and I’d seen people practising tai chi and chanting from the temples and I’d think ‘they look so peaceful and calm’, and I just wanted to feel that way.”
After practising the Iyengar method of yoga, Simone moved to Ashtanga and then Vinyasa yoga and completed her teacher training.
“I like to teach and I still like to be a student,” she says.
“I always look forward to getting onto the mat and I love combining yoga, pranayama and meditation.
“It helps me with clarity and to feel more grounded through stressful and difficult times.
“I’ll forever be grateful for it – I recommend it to everyone and love sharing it.”
Simone’s other wellness secrets
Making a sea-change to a coastal home on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula has also been life-changing, Simone says.
“I have my little rituals – I rise with the sun and love swimming in the ocean and walking my dog in the mornings and evenings through the bushes and trees, just soaking in nature,” she shares.
The 53-year-old says time with her children is precious.
“I always look forward to spending time with them, I love their time and I love time on my own.
“I don’t drink and don’t smoke, I eat plainly and I try and find the goodness in each day.”
A holistic approach to wellness
While embracing life in her 50s, Simone admits with a laugh that “I don’t like ageing”.
“But I’ve accepted it and I know that the wrinkles on my face are the lines of the life that I’ve lived, it’s just something we have to deal with, so I try and be positive about it.”
She says being an ambassador for Melbourne-based supplements brand Wanderlust, a company known for its liquid herbal extracts, sits perfectly with her holistic approach to life.
“Wanderlust is about harnessing the best in nature, which really resonates with me,” she says.
“All of the products are vegan-friendly, are made from organic, plant or natural ingredients, with no nasties, there’s a lot of goodness going on and I love the clean, plant-powered philosophy.”
As for the future, Simone plans to keep spreading her yoga message.
“I’ll keep enjoying my practice and I hope one day the kids want to practice also.
“Brookie just gets the giggles when we do little classes together and Jackson does some stretches now and then.
“Yoga is something that comes to people when they’re ready, you’ve got to want it and the intention has to be there,” she says.
