Disco glam is back – ‘70s hair and make-up looks you’ll love today
Disco never died. In fact, big hair, brights and glitter galore are trending in beauty. Here’s how to embrace the latest ’70s-inspired glam looks.
Disco’s rise to prominence in the late 1960s and early ‘70s inspired many polarising sounds in music, and divisive trends in fashion and beauty but above all, the era celebrated being bold and standing out from the crowd.
It’s a stark contrast to many recent trends that were pushed on social media and celebrated blending in.
Thankfully, a post-pandemic desire for individualism and self-expression has shifted the zeitgeist and given new life to disco glam, with ‘70s-inspired looks all over Instagram and TikTok.

Why professionals are glad disco glam is back
It’s welcome news for professionals in the creative space who want to get more experimental with hair and make-up, including Melbourne make-up artist Jenifer In.
“I find it so inspiring that people are honing their creativity and embracing the disco vibe,” Jenifer says.
How to embrace disco glam make-up
According to Jenifer, the modern approach to disco glam typically involves a subtle touch of glitter and playful face embellishments, rather than a full-blown throwback look.
“I’ve found that applying glitter eyeshadow with your fingertips can work wonders,” Jenifer says.
“Not only does the glitter particles adhere more effectively to your eyelids, but it also allows for a gradual build-up of intensity – better yet, using your fingers provides a forgiving application method, making it easier to experiment.”

The disco look is all about big hair
Much like in make-up, maximalist trends are taking hair in a more exciting direction.
We first saw this in the re-emergence of ‘90s va-va-voom blowouts and voluminous up-dos, and now there’s the resurgence of Farrah Fawcett-inspired, layered flips; sleek, poker-straight lengths à la Cher; and voluminous afros inspired by Diana Ross.
Oscar Oscar salon partner Nathan Armagnacq says there’s a bit at play here.
“Low-maintenance hair trends are phasing out and a return to highly styled and coloured hair is making a huge comeback, mainly due to everyone looking the same,” Nathan says.
“Open Instagram or TikTok and every hairdresser and influencer is producing the same hair on repeat.
“It’s getting boring and, ironically, it has inspired the exact opposite trend; people are learning to value individualism again.”

How to get ‘70s-inspired glam hair
One of the easiest ways to achieve a disco glam look is by drawing inspiration from Farrah Fawcett’s iconic ‘70s flip.
“I love the modern take we’re seeing, which involves the ‘Fawcett cut’ combined with modern contouring of hair, a wider-set fringe, and a combination of connected and disconnected face-framing layers,” Nathan says.
“What’s brilliant about this style is that it can be altered to work for all face shapes.
“We’re also seeing a little more sparkle in hair colour, with cute little pops of brights sitting within light or dark hair, which adds a tinsel-like effect to the hair.”
