Seven runway-inspired makeup trends to try in 2023
A number of key makeup trends have been lighting up the international runways this year. Here’s how to recreate the looks at home.
From loud and vibrant eyeshadow to the bare-faced Dutch girl trend, the makeup trends from fashion weeks in New York and London were all about making a statement while championing minimalism.
Embracing a more natural look, makeup artists are tending to focus on embellished elements of the face and leaving the rest bare.
Here are some of the trends likely to take off.
- Aussie trends: Best hair and makeup looks from Australian Fashion Week
Bejewelled eyebrows
Trust us on this – sparkling eyebrows are a great idea for your next night out.
Peter Do introduced this look on his FW23 runway, with models sporting a clean base, clear lip gloss and glitter eyebrows in red, silver and pink.
Naturally, this look isn’t for the faint of heart, but if you’re a fan of the Euphoria makeup trend, this is the next best thing.
- Want to dazzle? Try the crystal makeup trend
Statement eyeshadow
Is this the end of the smoky eye?
Not exactly, but this statement eyeshadow trend has taken over for the likes of Tory Burch and Prabal Gurung.
The clean base is complemented with a nude lip or clear gloss, which leaves the entire focus on your eyes.
For Tory Burch, they leant into the Euphoria and disco trend, using a large block of silver eyeshadow, bedazzled with tiny crystals on the lids.
However, for Prabal Gurung, shades of purple and blue were the main attraction, with sweeping colours across the entire lid and into a large wing on the temples.
In everyday practice, this is an excellent choice for a night out on the town and is minimal enough to wear with your best outfit.

- Be seen in green: The makeup colour that is seriously hot
Oil slick smoky eyes
Remember when we said it wasn’t the end of the smoky eye trend? This is the proof.
Tom Ford went back to his roots this season and pulled out sparkling, colourful ensembles, complemented by bold and slick smoky eye makeup.
With bronzed skin and neutral lips, all emphasis was on the eyes.
The beauty behind this look is its oil-slick appearance.
Recreate it with bronze and brown eyeshadow, smudging it on the lower lash line with an eyeshadow gloss.
Add a small whip of mascara to your top lashes but avoid the bottom.

Feeling plum
It’s not all about the eyes this season – it’s also a year of the lip.
Staying true to the bare-faced trend we’ve seen, this makeup look relies on the lower half of the face, leaving the rest barely touched.
At Molly Goddard’s London Fashion Week collection, it was all about clean and fresh faces with no eye makeup or heavy bronzer, blush or contour.
Instead, your eyes go straight to the ombre plum lip colours.
This is a slightly smudged look, without the use of heavy lip liner or concealer to smooth out the edges.
To create this look, find a shade of plum lipstick and soft pink.
Outline your lips and fill in the majority of the space with a darker colour.
Then apply a few dabs of the lighter shade in the centre of your lower and upper lips, buffing the two together with a brush or your finger to create a diffused ombre effect.
The ‘Dutch girl’ makeup look
Nensi Dojaka is entering her Dutch girl era for her latest collection.
This bright-eyed and bare-faced trend is all the rage on TikTok, using minimal cosmetics to achieve a flawless-but-natural effect.
The appearance of no foundation is substituted with a soft sweep of blush on the cheeks and a touch of bronzer.
Brows are brushed upwards without much product (if any at all) and a few swipes of mascara.
The final touch is a dollop of high-shine lip gloss for a dramatic effect.
