How to reduce noise – and why you should

Loud noises aren’t just an annoyance; they can cause hearing loss. Here’s how to protect your ears from the din of modern life.

From loud co-workers to lawnmowers, the world is undeniably a noisy place.

Some noises are simply irritating but others may lead to hearing loss.

So what level of noise could be putting you at risk?

Repeated or lengthy exposure to sounds at or above 85 decibels (about the level of a vacuum cleaner) can cause hearing loss.

People who work in loud environments are at higher risk, including construction workers, musicians, farmers, miners and those in the military.

But even if you don’t work in those industries, you could be unwittingly placing yourself in a position where hearing loss is a possibility.

3 scenarios where it’s wise to protect your ears

1: Live gigs

Many of us love live music – and the louder, the better.

But if the music at a concert is 103 decibels (which can happen), the government’s advice is you can only safely listen to it without ear protection for less than eight minutes.

2: Using power tools

Fancy yourself a home handyman or woman?

It can take virtually no time at all to permanently damage your hearing if you use these power tools without ear protection: an electric drill (less than one minute), chainsaw (less than two minutes) and lawnmower (15 minutes).

3: Riding a motorcycle

If you’re one of the 2.2 million motorcycle licence holders in Australia, don’t close your ears to this fact: The recommended amount of time you can safely ride your bike at 97 decibels without ear protection is only 30 minutes.

How to minimise your exposure to loud noise

To safeguard your hearing, the government advises to be aware of the noise around you.

It says you should be able to easily understand someone talking to you from a metre away.

Turn down the volume of your TV, radio and music and have “listening breaks” to limit your exposure to loud noise.

Wear hearing protection equipment when loud noise is unavoidable – we’re talking noise-reduction or noise-cancelling headphones, earplugs or earmuffs.
