Jade Kisnorbo’s guide to rocking statement red lipstick

It doesn’t get more classic than a bold pop of lipstick. Here are beauty guru Jade Kisnorbo’s tips on how to perfect a statement red lip.

One of the biggest misconceptions in beauty is that high-impact make-up (think: Mob Wives aesthetic) requires a heavy-handed approach.

It could not be further from the truth.

Instead, when it comes to a statement lip, keeping your make-up pared back and simple is the easiest way to stand out.

As counterintuitive as it might seem, a colourful lip is only going to stand out if it is not competing against the rest of your make-up.

For this reason, a sheer, natural-looking base is one of the quickest and easiest ways to enhance a bold lip.

For drier skin types, opt for a glowy finish for your base — this has the bonus of giving your look a modern, fresh touch.

Here are beauty guru Jade Kisnorbo’s tips on how to perfect a bold, statement lip.

Do prep your lips

For the ultimate long-wearing lip, you really want to take your time to prep adequately.

If your lips are flaky or chapped, take a sugar lip scrub or clean toothbrush and lightly buff and exfoliate the dead skin away.

Then, take your preferred lip balm and apply it liberally, leaving it to absorb for 10 to 15 minutes.

After that, take a tissue and blot away any remnants of the product.

Now the lips are smooth, hydrated and ready for make-up application.

Don’t skip the lip liner

A quality lip liner is a make-up tool kit essential behind most long-wearing lips.

If you prefer a solid colour, go for a lip liner that matches as close as possible your lipstick of choice.

Brands often have lip liners that match a corresponding lip shade, which helps take out the guesswork.

Alternatively, using a deeper lip liner gives dimension to the lip, whereas a cool-tone brown lip liner gives a shadowed, contoured effect.

It all comes down to personal preference, and this extends to whether you only line the perimeter of the lips or the entire area.

If you go with the latter, it can extend the wear of your lipstick.

However, be mindful of doing this with a deeper lip liner as it can distort the lip shade that you apply on top.

Choose the right lipstick style

Now that your lips are prepped, primed and lined, they are ready for your chosen product.

Consider your lips and whether they are prone to dryness or have texture.

Generally, a lipstick formula is more gentle and forgiving on the lips, while liquid lipsticks are more drying but longer wearing.

If you want added hydration, lightly dabbing a clear lip oil, gloss or balm with your finger can give a soft, glowy finish without lifting or compromising the other lip products.

For the ultimate crisp finish, take a small detail brush and use a speck of concealer to trace the outer lip line to clean up any smudges.

Find your perfect shade

Red lipstick is a classic, universally flattering make-up shade, but not all reds were created equally and not all shades are going to work for everyone.

That’s why it’s important to familiarise yourself with your undertone and overall colouring.

If you lean warm, your most flattering reds will also be warm based; look for reds with an orange base.

Alternatively, blue-based reds are most flattering on cooler undertones and have the added benefit of making your teeth look whiter.

If you lean neutral, true reds are your best bet.
