Jade K: Why it’s important to let your teen have fun with make-up
Is your teen exploring the world of make-up? Beauty guru Jade Kisnorbo says it’s important to let them dabble and offers tips for achieving a youthful look.
Remember the days of rummaging through your mum’s make-up kit to steal, or rather, “borrow” her mascara?
From struggling to draw perfect winged eyeliner to perhaps getting in trouble at school for putting on bold lipstick, we all know what it was like to be young and fascinated by make-up.
While teens don’t always get their make-up right, The House of Wellness beauty expert Jade Kisnorbo says allowing them to experiment with their look is good for their self-esteem.
Why you should let your teen have fun with make-up
“Not a lot is said about how a lot of parents shame teenagers and adolescents about make-up,” Jade says.
As a mum of two young girls, Jade believes it’s important for parents to understand how make-up can be a positive outlet for their kids to experiment with.
“I don’t think parents need to get scared if your daughter, son or anyone wants mascara or some concealer,” she says.
“It’s more about how make-up can make you feel, I think that’s the message we need to pass on especially to the younger generation that we just want to enhance what we have, we don’t want to change anything.
“It gives you confidence.”
So, if there’s one message she has for parents with a teen who has a love for make-up, it’s to simply “join in” the fun.
Here, Jade shares her advice for helping teens achieve a lovely look suitable for their age:
Jade Kisnorbo’s top make-up tips for teens
Use gentle make-up products
When it comes to finding the right make-up product, Jade recommends teens choose one which doesn’t irritate their skin.
“Approaching make-up on teens rather than adults, my (advice) would be (to use) more creams (as) they’re more gentle on the skin,” Jade told The House of Wellness TV.
“Also, I don’t want to put anything on the skin that’s going to aggravate it.
“You’re a lot more sensitive (at that age), you’re going through puberty, you may have acne.
“So, be really careful that the make-up you’re using is a little bit more natural.”
Full coverage isn’t always necessary
Unlike what most people would think, Jade says foundation isn’t always necessary, even when she’s dolling up celebrities for the vogue carpet.
Instead of a full face coverage, she suggests teens opt for a good creamy concealer.
“Just apply to any areas where you may have a little bit of a pink blemish, a pimple or acne… to create a nice flawless finish,” Jade says.
Be mindful of hygiene in your make-up application
From brushes to sponges, everyone has their preferred way of applying make-up.
Jade prefers using brushes, and says it’s important teenagers are mindful of what comes into contact with their face.
“For these ages – teenage years – you don’t want to put anymore bacteria on the area that can kind of get a little bit more red or have more blemishes or pimples.”
Prep your skin right
Jade says preparing your skin with the right base of SPF moisturiser before concealer application can do wonders to your overall look in avoiding a cakey finish.
Not to mention, this little trick might just be subtle enough to be appropriate for a school day.
“But if you’re wearing a full base and a full foundation look overall, you’re pretty much heading for detention,” Jade jokes.
Always have a cream blush at hand
Jade recommends a cream blush for every age group because it helps to bring lost texture back to the skin after applying concealer, foundation or tinted moisturiser.
“I think this just wakes you up again, it’s really fresh,” Jade says.
Jade recommends a coral tone for teens, which suits most skin tones and helps to keep a fresh and youthful look.
“One thing I love about blush is you can use it both on the lips and the cheeks so it works as a dual product,” she says.
“So for parents, it’s less money that they have to spend.
“Maybe mum might use it herself.”
Blink into your mascara
Jade says the best way to doll up your eyelashes is to blink into your mascara.
“What you’ll find is it just really extends those lashes,” she says.
Just make sure you’re using waterproof mascara unless you’re looking to get panda eyes.
