Get the look: Low-key luxe
Step 1
If you prefer a glowy, glossy base, begin by applying a luminising primer underneath your foundation, focusing on the high points of the face.
If you are prone to oiliness, avoid applying the primer to your T-zone.
Step 2
Put some contour stick on the back of your hand to warm it up and then apply it conservatively with a brush — you can always build it up by gradually adding more.
Carve out the natural shadows of your face, then blend the product using a brush or sponge.
Step 3
Line your lips with your preferred lip liner, which is ideally one or two shades darker than your lip product, so it creates dimension and shadow.
Next, apply your lipstick before using it on your cheeks as a makeshift cream blush, marrying the tones on your face.
Budge-proof your base
Weddings and special occasions are typically all-day events, which is why your make-up needs to hold up.
Thankfully, simple hacks and touch-up techniques can extend the wear of your make-up in no time.
Power of prep work
How well your make-up lasts throughout the day is very much dependent on the prep work involved. For this reason, it’s always a good idea to start with freshly cleansed, moisturised skin.
Another tip is to avoid serums or oils that leave a residue as this can interact with make-up.
Primers aren’t an essential step, but if you are prone to oiliness or have uneven skin texture, they can help to enhance the skin and provide a more flawless, long-lasting finish.
Set and spray
Translucent powder and setting sprays are two of the most effective tools for extending the life of your make-up and these products have dual uses.
In addition to serving as make-up finishers, they can also prep your base before you apply make-up.
A thin dusting of translucent setting powder and a spritz of setting spray help to absorb the natural oils on the face, preventing them from interfering with and breaking down make-up.
For the ultimate long-wear hack, repeat the process again when you have finished your make-up to seal everything in place.
Lip layering
Layering lip products will help create maximum impact and wear. One way to do this is by lining the lips before and after applying your chosen lip product.
Depending on the lip finish and lip product, you can also blot your lips with tissue before adding on another layer to build up coverage and wear time.
If you are going for a bold shade, lip stains provide a budge-proof base with ample colour pay-off.
Lip sealants are another alternative, working in a similar way to setting sprays.
Build a kit
When celebrity make-up artists create red carpet looks, they often give their famous clients a custom “kit” to take with them for touch-ups over the course of the event.
However, you don’t need to be famous to adopt this approach at the next special occasion you attend.
Simply take the lip product and lip liner you plan to wear, a compact powder for touch-ups, and blotting paper if you have oily skin.
