5 ways to manage sensitive skin

Many of us battle sensitive, dry or eczema-prone skin. While it can be tricky to manage, some lifestyle tweaks may provide effective relief.

Our skin is our largest organ, responsible for wrapping our whole body, acting as the first line of defence against infection, keeping us cool and providing key information regarding pain and pleasure – that’s why it’s so important to take care of your skin.

Whether presenting as sensitivity, dryness or itchiness, skin issues are incredibly common.

Overall, 60 to 70 per cent of women and 50 to 60 per cent of men report having some degree of sensitive skin, and nearly three million Australians are impacted by eczema.

The good news is simple lifestyle changes can make a world of difference in calming dry, irritated skin.

Here are 5 strategies to try

#1: Have lukewarm, not hot, showers

Hot water can dry out, irritate and damage the most outer layer of skin.

Lukewarm water, on the other hand, can help add moisture to your skin – just be sure to apply a moisturiser soon after patting the skin dry.

#2: Identify and avoid irritants

Soaps, fragrances and woollen or prickly fabrics are just some of the things that can be a trigger for dry or sensitive skin.

When you know what’s irritating your skin, you can better avoid the cause and reduce instances of dryness, redness or itching.

#3: Use a soap-free body wash

Many soaps can strip moisture from your skin.

Avoid soap where possible.

Soap-free cleansers are best for sensitive skin and help maintain the skin’s moisture and preserve the skin barrier.

#4: Moisturise your skin

Moisturising the skin helps retain moisture and restores the skin’s protective barrier.

#5: Look for ingredients that nourish sensitive skin

DermaVeen products contain a 100 per cent natural ingredient made from finely milled oats, called OatActiv+.

Oats are a centuries-old topical treatment for skin sensitivities, and OatActiv+ acts as a natural skin shield that works in six ways:

  • Hydrates skin
  • Prevents skin moisture loss
  • Soothes skin prone to itch
  • Protects the skin barrier
  • Balances the skin’s normal pH levels
  • Supports skin barrier repair and restoration
