Jade Kisnorbo’s guide to the bubble gum beauty trend
If you thought the pink renaissance expired with Barbiecore, think again. Pep up your make-up with candy colours for a fun, eye-popping aesthetic.
It is easy to play it safe and stick to neutral make-up — what with its practicality and ability to suit any occasion.
But limiting yourself to a safe, inoffensive make-up colour palette can get boring very quickly.
And when you consider the many colourful, vibrant make-up formulas out there to experiment with, it would seem the emerging ‘bubble gum beauty’ trend is the perfect excuse to bring colour into your routine.
Featuring shades of bubble gum pink, grape and violet, the candy-inspired tones are a nod to the mid-2000s (think the original Mean Girls aesthetic, along with millennial TV classic The O.C.).
Here’s how to embrace the bubblegum beauty aesthetic.
Ace your base
Prep your base as normal, ensuring your skin is well moisturised and your skin tint or foundation well blended.
Because ‘bubble gum beauty’ is all about fresh-faced beauty, stick to a sheer base that allows your skin to shine through if you can.
To maintain the theme of natural-looking make-up, stick to a cream bronzer and liquid luminiser to add dimension back into the face.
If you experience an oily T-zone, set the area with your preferred powder and top things off by brushing up your brow hairs into place, which gives a lifted effect to the face.
Keep it simple
The trick with a colourful eye look is to keep it simple, which is why a colourful graphic eye is one of the most common approaches.
I love that this trend embraces purple tones because it can be incredibly flattering on the eyes, especially those with brown or hazel eyes.
There is no rule of thumb with a graphic eye.
Simply take your chosen vibrant eyeshadow stick and create a shape along your eye, whether it be along the lower waterline, upper lashline or even an inverted winged liner if you are after something more intricate.
For those prone to creasing, going over the stick formula with a corresponding eyeshadow can help ‘set’ the shadow into place and make it longer wearing.
Pretty in pink
Bubble gum pink is the hero shade of this make-up trend, and it is very versatile.
The shade itself is universally flattering and works great as a blush or lip colour, which is how I’ve used it for Billie’s make-up look.
Simply take your chosen liquid blush and apply to the apples and high points of the cheekbones for maximum effect.
For added luminosity, take a pink-based luminiser and layer it on top of your blush for a multi-dimensional effect.
Apply the remaining product to your lips to ‘marry’ the tones of pink, completing the look with a touch of clear gloss for maximum shine.
