Red revival: The timeless power lip colour is back

Classic beauty looks have long been associated with shades of red, and this summer it’s tipped to become the colour of the season.

From the “tomato girl’’ and “strawberry girl’’ trends to “cherry cola’’ lips, nails and hair – red was a dominant force in beauty this year.

And as 2023 draws to a close, the colour is expected to be even more prevalent next year.

The return of the bold red lip

While much of the red-themed beauty trends this past year have been inventive and a little edgy, next year’s take is forecast to veer into more classic looks such as a bold red lip.

Much like a little black dress, a bold red lip is timeless, which is why it’s little surprise to see more people embracing the tried and trusted trend, particularly as beauty continues to shift towards more classic lines.

According to Melbourne make-up artist Lirije Gashi, there’s a lot to appreciate about a red lip.

“A bold lip is pretty easy to master, regardless of your skill level, and it instantly elevates your make-up and can make it look more polished,” Lirije says.

“One of my favourite date night looks that comes to mind involves a subtle eye look, such as a classic cat eye, complete with some coats of mascara and a bold lip.”

Why the classics are making a comeback

Melbourne make-up artist Madeleine Goldsmith says the red lip is a classic for a reason.

“The great thing about a red lip is it can suit everyone at any age or stage,” Madeleine says.

“I love a red lip for a classic statement make-up moment, but you can also opt for a sheer or glossy formula for a more subtle look.”

For those who prefer keeping their make-up looking fresh and youthful, Madeleine suggests combining a red lip with sunkissed, bronzed skin and a simple “clean girl’’ eye.

“If you want something more intense, I’d combine a red lip with a killer lash look; it’s a versatile colour to work with,” she says.

Three key tips for mastering a red lip

While it’s true that red lips are universally flattering – the right shade of red is going to be different for everyone.

According to Madeleine, readers should keep three factors in mind when finding their perfect shade of red lippy:

  1. Choose the right red for your skin tone.

Warm or orange based reds are best on warmer skin tones while cool or blue-based reds are better for a cool complexion.

  1. Ensure you maintain your lip.

Maintenance of a red lip is easy if you are prepared.

Opt for a lip pencil or long-wearing formula to define your shape and stop your lipstick running.

If you’re worried about your upkeep – stick to matte formulas to decrease your slip risk.

Also ensure your complexion around your chin is well set to stop your surface oils from smudging as you eat and drink.

  1. Wear it with confidence.

When you feel good, you look good.
